Lot 250Small 1940 pocket diary written in pencil by Frederick Arthur Hurley (626956) of RAF 142 Squadron with pen & pencil entries of daily thoughts and activities, both military and personal, including his blossoming romance with "Jessie".
Squadron 142 was part of the Advanced Air Striking Force deployed to France from Bicester on Sept 10th 1939. The diary covers the period up to 16th June 1940 when they were "chased out of France. Taken off from Brest under Naval escort" and describing the devastating German attacks and loss of life of many of Frederick's friends. The diary continues back in England at RAF Eastchurch and its virtual destruction on 4th September resulting in eighty deaths. Enclosed with the diary are some loose notes "1940 What I Shall Never Forget" giving more details of events covered in the diary, and a list of "My Pals of 1940 of 142 Squadron B.E.F Killed in Action"
